Introduction:

Derived from the Greek word for “description,” ekphrasis is the practice of writing poetry inspired by visual art. For this workshop at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, we approached ekphrasis not as a writing about artwork, but as writing to, from and with the work itself. Through a series of guided prompts and generative writing sessions, participants engaged with the exhibitions of painters Andreas Schulze, and Joyce Pensato, ceramicist Masaomi Yasunaga and sculptor Richard Hunt, experimenting with a range of ekphrastic approaches.

When we linger with an artwork for long enough, what new meanings form in the space between image and language? This culminating zine features the poetry of twelve writers united by a shared curiousity about what emerges when we inhabit, challenge and correspond with visual art.
